The truth about “food rules”…
Most people hear that phrase and immediately cringe.
Rules? Ugh. Sounds restrictive, boring, and "diet-y".
But here’s the plot twist:
The right rules actually create more freedom.
They eliminate that annoying mental tug-of-war you get when you ask:
“Should I eat this?”
“Is this bad?”
“Am I being good or bad right now?”
That constant internal debate creates stress, guilt, and decision fatigue...
... and ironically, it’s the stuff that makes people give up altogether.
But when you set a couple of simple personal rules (ones that align with your goals), it’s like putting your health on "autopilot".
You’re not being strict, you’re being smart.
Let me give you two examples I follow myself:
Rule #1 No caffeine after 1:30pm
I love coffee… but if I have it late in the day, I don’t sleep well.
And if I don’t sleep well? I crave junk the next day.
So I don’t let myself make that decision
anymore.
If it’s 3pm and I want a coffee? Too bad. The rule already decided for me.
Rule # 2 Protein + veggies first at buffets or parties
I still enjoy my favorites (mmm carbs - especially my mom and sisters' desserts lol)…
But by filling up with lean protein and fiber first, I naturally eat less of the heavier stuff without trying to restrict myself.
No guilt. Just a better system that works for me.
Now it’s your turn:
What are two simple rules you could follow that would make your nutrition easier and less stressful?
Start with ones that feel doable. You can always tweak later.
And if you want, hit reply and share your rules with me. I’d love to hear what you come up with.
No judgment. Just support.
You’ve got this,
Mike
P.S. You don’t need more willpower. You need fewer decisions. That’s what smart food rules do.
