You ever notice
how you feel just a little lighter after a good laugh or a real conversation with someone you care about?
Like… not just emotionally lighter... sometimes even physically. (It’s like your body’s way of saying, “Thank you. We needed that.”)
Here’s the kicker:
That kind of connection can actually help you eat better, too.
No, I’m not saying texting your friend burns calories...
I’m saying loneliness, especially the subtle kind, can drive emotional eating more than most people realize.
When we feel isolated, stressed, or just “meh,” we’re more likely to reach for something sweet, salty, or crunchy (and sometimes all three).
But here’s the wild part…
Even when people know connection is good for them, they’ll still hesitate to reach
out.
Why?
A study from the University of Chicago found that we underestimate how much others actually want to hear from us.
Crazy, right?
You’ve probably had those thoughts:
“She’s probably busy. I don’t wanna bug her.”
“I only have 5 minutes so what’s the point?”
“They’ll think I’m weird if I just randomly text them.”
But most people? They’re
craving that connection.
They’d be thrilled to hear from you.
And that five-minute chat could do more good for your health than another round of “I’ll just be good starting Monday.”
So what’s this got to do with coaching?
A lot, actually.
Because what looks like a food problem: overeating, low motivation, late-night snacking...
…might actually be a connection problem.
If you’re finding yourself stuck, tired of the same old cycle, or using food for comfort more often than you'd like, don’t just change your diet.
Change your approach.
When I coach clients, yes - we cover nutrition, movement, and habits.
But we also uncover why some of those habits are hard to change… and build a better plan that fits their real life.
