In an interview I had a few months ago for an upcoming podcast and virtual summit, we talked about what traits my most successful clients have.
Here they are:
1. They embrace the long game
I talk about the long game constantly but there's a big difference between nodding along and agreeing and actually adopting that mindset / perspective.
My most successful clients know that the problem wasn't created overnight. So the results won't happen overnight either.
They treat the process as a forever pursuit VS a "flash in the pan".
2. They communicate
proactively instead of reactively
Proactive communication is when they anticipate a potential roadblock and ask me for advice and guidance on navigating the situation.
Reactive communication is saying nothing about it and then
springing it on their coach after things went sideways.
Note: I still want to know when things go sideways but the best clients communicate before AND after the event! :)
3. They use failure as feedback and are open to doing things
differently
This may sound obvious but some people are dead set on doing the same things they've always done and expect a different outcome.
The most successful clients view failure as an opportunity to learn and grow and are open to new solutions to common problems.
4. They view their dream outcome as a checkpoint, not a finish line
Some of the most unfortunate stories I hear is when someone who "makes it" and reaches their ultimate goal... only to view it as an end point.
Then
they default back to previous behaviors.
Successful clients view the dream outcome as a direction, not a destination or a finish line.
They want this for life. Not for a fleeting moment.
5. They
lean in to the boring, simple, day-to-day difference makers
Some people find this "boring"...
I'm talking about walking, stress management, proper sleep, food choices, and exercise.
Everyone wants
to search for the magic bullet. We love to make things more complicated than they need to be.
It's easy to blame hormones or genetics or age or metabolism...
It's easy to search for the pill or the supplement or the missing piece that will make it rain results...
But the reality is... the "boring" daily habits will create 99% of the results you desire.
My best clients actually love that they don't need to overcomplicate things and they find ways to extract joy in that process.
I could keep going with more characteristics of successful clients but these are the top 5 that make the biggest difference.
If you're considering working with a coach, you're smart for doing so.
However, it's not a guarantee that you'll get to where you want to be.
If you can be honest with yourself and embrace those 5 characteristics above, you'll transform your body (and life).
If you can't, then I would stay on the sidelines until you can.
Hope this helps!
All the best,
Coach Mike
